Threat Actor 🇨🇳 China

HAFNIUM

Also known as: ATK233 · G0125 · Operation Exchange Marauder · Red Dev 13 · Silk Typhoon · MURKY PANDA

HAFNIUM primarily targets entities in the United States across a number of industry sectors, including infectious disease researchers, law firms, higher education institutions, defense contractors, policy think tanks, and NGOs. Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) attributes this campaign with high confidence to HAFNIUM, a group assessed to be state-sponsored and operating out of China, based on observed victimology, tactics and procedures. HAFNIUM has previously compromised victims by exploiting vulnerabilities in internet-facing servers, and has used legitimate open-source frameworks, like Covenant, for command and control. Once they’ve gained access to a victim network, HAFNIUM typically exfiltrates data to file sharing sites like MEGA.In campaigns unrelated to these vulnerabilities, Microsoft has observed HAFNIUM interacting with victim Office 365 tenants. While they are often unsuccessful in compromising customer accounts, this reconnaissance activity helps the adversary identify more details about their targets’ environments. HAFNIUM operates primarily from leased virtual private servers (VPS) in the United States.

BeyondTrust patches zero-day exploited in attacks since August
BeyondTrust has patched a critical zero-day vulnerability, CVE-2026-102764, in its Remote Support (RS) and Privileged Remote Access (PRA) appliances that was exploited in attacks since August 2026. The flaw is an authentication bypass allowing unprivileged remote attackers to perform file operations on unpatched systems. The China-nexus espionage actor 'Armory Castle' (also known as UNC5221 or 'Warp Panda') exploited the vulnerability to gain initial access, escalate to root privileges, deploy Sawfly web shell and Bareclaw tunneler malware, and move laterally using stolen credentials. Organizations with internet-exposed appliances during the exploitation window should assume compromise.

U.S. Offers Up to $10 Million for Tips on Zhang Yu, Charged in HAFNIUM Hacks
Zhang Yu, a Chinese national and director at Shanghai Firetech Information Science and Technology, is wanted by U.S. authorities for his alleged role in state-sponsored cyber espionage activities linked to the HAFNIUM campaign. He is charged in connection with the 2021 Microsoft Exchange Server attacks that exploited zero-day vulnerabilities, including ProxyLogon, to compromise over 12,700 U.S. organizations. The U.S. State Department is offering up to $10 million for information leading to his identification or location. Zhang allegedly coordinated hacking operations on behalf of China's Ministry of State Security, targeting U.S. universities involved in COVID-19 research and an international law firm, alongside co-conspirator Xu Zewei, who was extradited to the U.S. in April 2026.

New Dell System Update flaw lets hackers gain root privileges
Dell has disclosed a critical vulnerability in its System Update (DSU) command-line interface tool, tracked as CVE-2026-86360, which allows unauthenticated remote attackers to exploit a path traversal weakness and execute arbitrary code with root privileges. The flaw affects Linux and Windows systems used in PowerEdge enterprise server infrastructure. Dell recommends updating DSU to version 2.3.0.0 or later to mitigate the issue. The company also patched four high-severity flaws in DSU and two maximum-severity vulnerabilities in Container Storage Modules (CSM). While no active exploitation has been confirmed, state-backed groups like Lazarus and UNC6201 have previously exploited Dell vulnerabilities.

Dell asks admins to patch max severity CSM flaws as soon as possible
Dell has patched two maximum severity vulnerabilities in its Container Storage Modules (CSM) that affect enterprise storage integration with Kubernetes environments. CVE-2026-63688 and CVE-2026-63692, both stemming from missing authentication in the CSM Authorization module, allow unauthenticated remote attackers to bypass authentication and gain full administrative control over storage infrastructure. Dell advises immediate upgrade to CSM version 1.18.0 or later to mitigate these critical risks. Additionally, four other critical vulnerabilities were patched, enabling privilege escalation, token forgery, and unauthorized access to Kubernetes secrets.

BeyondTrust warns of critical flaws in remote access software
BeyondTrust has disclosed two critical vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-40138 and CVE-2026-40139, in its Remote Support (RS) and Privileged Remote Access (PRA) software that allow unauthenticated attackers to bypass authentication and gain unauthorized access to affected systems. Exploitation requires specific configurations, though details were not disclosed. The vendor has patched cloud instances and urges self-hosted customers to update to version 25.3.3 or later. Previous vulnerabilities in the same software have been actively exploited in the wild by threat actors, including the Chinese state-backed group Silk Typhoon.
